This home had water-based finish in the kitchen and oil-based finish everywhere else in the house.

In this case the best solution is to (dustless) sand the entire floor and then finish it all using the same polyurethane. And in this case, it turned out great.

In one area in the living room, there was a significant line in the finish caused by the sunlight and an area rug. You can clearly see this line in the image below.

The line caused by the sunlight in front of this slider door (top of picture) was removed during the sanding process.

Since all of the wood is finished with Bona Woodline Oil Polyurethane, all of the transitions are now seamless. The character in the white oak really pops now too!
As usual, our dust containment system kept the dust particles off of the surfaces in the home. We were able to place the containment unit outside a 2nd floor window and run the hose up to our machines.

The blue hose connects to the drum sander and evacuates the dust into the containment system.

We use a Festool Hepa Vac with our edger machines to create a portable containment system for dustless edging.
As you can see from the bare wood, fir shows tones of brown, red, and yellow. This presents an opportunity to apply a natural finish an emphasize the character, or apply stain to create a unique look. In this case we applied a nice, medium stain to the fir wood floors.

Once we had some flooring sanded we applied stain samples for the customer to see before they decided on a color. This darker spot below is a sample of what it will look like when finished.
Finally, we applied Bona Mega polyurethane to finish the floors. This is a waterborne finish and is Greenguard Certified for indoor air quality.
This project is so much more than a refinish because the original floor was an orange-colored pine with a lot of wear-and-tear.

This project had a lot going on... there were a lot of areas where the floor had been scratched or where the previous finish was damaged, and we also installed brand new flooring in the kitchen, which was being remodeled.

This project shows a really awesome transformation and we are excited to share a little bit about it.

Some areas of the floor had visible scratches in the hardwood from an overzealous carpet guy and his knife. As you can see from this example, these scratches span over multiple boards. Luckily, in this case, the scratches weren't too deep so we were able to salvage the flooring by sanding it down with our Bona Dust Containment System.

And the spots you see in the following images isn't water spilled on the floor. This is actually drips of polyurethane that dried in pools over multiple rows.

The homeowner decided to go with a custom mix of Jacobean/Ebony/Red Oak Minwax stain to completely transform their flooring. Below you can see the progression from the previous natural finish, to where the stain was applied, and finally to where the final coat of Bona Woodline polyurethane was applied.
This job had it all: ripout, install and refinish. So I'm really excited to share some details of this project!

The customer's foyer and hallway had a tile they wanted gone. They wanted to update the areas and blend it into the existing kitchen, which had prefinished wood flooring installed; this they wanted to keep.

Here you can see the tile material in the foyer and into the hallway.

Ripout Phase
This part if very important. Not only do we need to be very careful not to damage anything besides what is being removed, this also gives us a chance to look for any trouble area in the subfloor. This is where having an expert installer comes in especially handy.
Refinish Phase

Now that that prefinished wood flooring was installed, it was time to tackle the existing kitchen floor. The kitchen floor was actually a prefinished floor as well. Some may not know this, but a prefinished floor can typically be sanded and refinished to extend its life.

TIP: Prefinished floors can be typically be refinished to extend the life of the floors!

As you can from the pictures taken before the floor was refinished, there were clear signs of wear-and-tear. You can see areas of discoloration and build-up from years of foot traffic.
We sanded the floors using our Bona Dust Containment System and then applied Bona Woodline oil-modified polyurethane finish with a semi-gloss sheen.

This creates a nice warn, amber-toned finish that blends well with the newly installed prefinished flooring in the hallway and foyer.

But first, we had to remove the existing flooring!

We were called to inspect this 3 1/4" prefinished Bruce Armstrong Gunstock floor that was purchased and installed by a local "big box" home improvement store about 10 years ago. These big box stores generally subcontract services such as flooring installations.

It was easy to notice many gaps between the rows of flooring, so it was obvious something went wrong with the installation.

Warning: we're about to get a little technical!

Once we began to remove the floor we quickly realized it was nailed backwards into the grooves instead of the tongue of the hardwood.

The installer had used an excessive amount of nails to trying to force the tongues into the grooves. It's obvious the installer was having trouble with the staples blocking the the tongues from setting completely into the grooves.
We had about a half a bundle of wood left for the customer. These individual prefinished boards can be used to repair the floor one board at a time or a small section.

Things happen in life, such as water that overflowing from a plant or a new puppy peeing on a wood floor- things like this can cause permanent damage. We can use these leftover boards and replace damaged areas with no need to sand and refinish!

Repairing the floor without the need to sand/finish the entire room is one of the greatest benefits to prefinished flooring!

Unfortunately, some areas of the floor had been damaged by water, so we were able to repair the damaged areas and then refinish the entire floor together.

We removed the damaged boards and patched those areas with new boards. Here, you can see that the newer boards installed near the tile are a bit lighter. After the entire floor is finished, all of the boards will look the same.

Bona Traffic polyurethane with a semi-gloss sheen was used to finish the floors. Here, we are in the process of applying the third and final coat of polyurethane. Bona Traffic is a commercial-grade finish, so these floors will withstand years of activity.
We recently had the privilege to refinish the wood floors as part of an upgrade to the cafeteria and lounge area at the Stonyfield Farm facility in Londonderry, NH.

This area is a very popular space that sees a lot of foot traffic on a daily basis. As you will see in the photos below, we were able to not only salvage this solid yellow birch wood floor, but really breathe a fresh breath of life back into them.

Take a look at the transformation of this gorgeous 2-1/4" Yellow Birch wood. It had been quite worn from foot traffic, but we were able to bring it back to life!

For the polyurethane finish, we applied Bona Traffic (see more at Bona's website), a commercial-grade waterborne finish. This product provides the high-quality and durability required to maintain these wood floors in a high-traffic area such as this.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The lower level of this home had pretty extensive water damage. When we pulled up the damaged floor we also found water-damaged cork beneath.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The cork was glued down to the concrete with a troweled wood glue. We removed the cork and then scraped the glue off of the concrete to prep the water-damaged areas of cork for replacement.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Unfortunately, as every job has unexpected things arise, cork was not readily available for purchase that day at any of the local distributors. In the interest of keeping the job on track and finishing on time, we substituted with rubber underlayment in place of cork. The cork and rubber underlayment were the same thickness and are very similar products.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Most flooring installers would stop there but we decided to also add layer of QuietWalk underlayment padding on top of the cork and rubber. This really took this installation to another level of quality.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">There are so many underlayment pads out there, and tend to be very expensive, although EverWood Flooring only uses QuietWalk Underlayment pad.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">You can read all about this product on their website (see the Resources section at the bottom of this profile), but here are a few:
<span style="color: #b45f06; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">- Sound absorption
<span style="color: #b45f06; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">- Moisture protection
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Then we installed Teragren Strand Bamboo <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">floating flooring, glued at the seams. Teragren Bamboo is regarded as one of the highest end, best Bamboo products out there<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">This product can be installed a number of ways over a number of different subfloors. In this case, the customer mainly chose this product based on color to match the existing Exotic Wenge flooring in other areas of their home.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">It is most often installed being nailed down or glued to a subfloor, but Teragren has such a good milling system that the boards can be floated and glued at the seams. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">This is how we installed this bamboo over QuietWalk underlayment.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">This type of installation can be very difficult for a homeowner where the product is not nailed and has no locking mechanism. Relying on glue to keep each row bonded to the next, we used blue tape on top of the boards to keep everything from separating during installation. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">For a homeowner, I would recommend either nailing or hiring a professional to glue the product to the floor or at the seams.
This customer recently purchased a home in Hollis, NH that had carpet in their open-concept family room. There was existing prefinished Bruce hardwood throughout the home already, and the home owner wanted to continue the wood flooring into the family room, but still have the room stand out as its own entity.

We decided that adding a 3-board border around the perimeter of the family room would fully define the space and make the statement they were looking for.

To create the perimeter, a natural oak was used for the outside and inside rows of the border. Using a red oak stained in a cherry color for the "inlay," or middle row of the border, really made the border around the room pop. The middle of the floor was filled in with this darker cherry color as well.

When installing a prefinished product, every cut around the border and boards must be routered, considering there will be no need to sand once installed. This makes sure every board stays together by tongue-and-groove, which limits any chance for separation over time.

This job was completed in a prefinished wood, although border work such as this can also be done with unfinished wood and sanded/finished on-site. This project features the results of our repair and dustless refinishing services. The home owner had a random-width, white ash hardwood installed, which we refinished with Bona Woodline oil-modified polyurethane. The home owner already had ash flooring throughout the entire home, and water damage required the kitchen floor to be replaced in large sections.

We were able to repair the flooring and remove the cupped boards, successfully weaving in new flooring. In the image below, you can see the newly patched area after it was installed and before it was finished. On the right, you can see the area blends in perfectly after the entire floor has been finished.

Here we are preparing our dustless sanding
equipment to sand the entire floor using
our Atomic Dust Containment System

As I mentioned, this flooring project included a random-width pattern. For a
unique look, a random-width (or mixed-width) installation uses a mixture
of board widths throughout the space. In this case, the floors included
3", 4", 5", and 6" white ash hardwood and had to be matched perfectly.

In case you aren't familiar with many wood species beyond say, oak, add Ash to your list because here are some interesting characteristics about the product. White ash is a domestic product and is currently available in plentiful supply. This makes ash hardwood an affordable wood flooring product option. Don't worry about durability with ash either because it falls right between red and white oak on a Janka Hardness Chart (more on this in a later post!).

Another benefit to white ash is that it responds well to finishes (and stains too). As you can see, the wood offers a lot of character in its grains.

In these photos, the floor looks shiny because the final coat of finish had just been applied. It appears that we applied a finish without stain, but actually used a natural Minwax stain.

It was an excellent choice in this case, letting the wood's natural colors and character shine through while still having a slight stain to make the grains more noticeable.
They had carpet, which we removed along with the padding and tack strips.

To prepare the surface, the subfloor was screwed down in a few spots to remove some minor squeaks.

In addition, the home owner wanted new stair treads installed that matched the new flooring. So we installed a rich “mink” finish Armstrong Ascot prefinished red oak, then custom-stained new stairs treads to match, and then installed the treads. We also reinstalled the spindles and installed new poplar risers (which the home owner painted on their own).
Having treads installed with the finish already applied makes for a more difficult install, but is a faster and cleaner alternative to a site finish. This way, the home owners were able to walk upstairs at night and not have to workaround the sand/stain/finish process in their home.

The process of matching the color of the stair treads with the prefinished flooring was not easy. First we tried Minwax stains, but after many mixed cans and too many attempts, I decided to use a different stain. We ended up with a combination of Saman stains perfectly mixed to match the prefinished floor. Then we sealed the treads with Bona Drifast Sealer and finished with Bona Woodline Oil-based semi-gloss Polyurethane.
Now, stairs are much more difficult than typical flooring and Dustin went to great lengths to make sure we understood all aspects of what was going to be done. Originally, we were going to have the flooring installed by a competitor (you can search my profile to find the other review). They had mentioned they would do it all in one day. After speaking with Dustin, it was clear that was not only not possible but would have been a disaster."
"We were quoted a 5 day install and that is exactly what it took. Dustin's team did a fantastic job and Dustin himself spent a huge amount of time to make sure that the stair treads and risers were properly installed. This is a key aspect that you won't find in budget contractors. The attention to detail was far beyond what we expected (in a very positive way). By working with Dustin ahead of time we were assured that we understood what was being done and how long each step should take."

"We did not have the risers pre-finished so I completed that after the stairs were done. Dustin spent a great amount of time making sure the cuts and alignment of each step was perfect. Although this took extra time, the end result was spectacular. The stairs are perfectly aligned and show no movement after two months of use. There is no shifting or noise and the stairs look great. Overall I would highly recommend this company and look forward to using them for future projects."
This project involved a kitchen remodel that had a plywood subfloor in the kitchen. The client had prefinished oak in their foyer and dining room, but wanted something unique in their newly remodeled kitchen.

They chose a 5" Birch Run 3/4"solid wood, color; black. This prefinished product comes in 6 colors, all with gorgeous character.
Homerwood’s Birch Run products offer a distinct character grade that can instantly affect the look of a room and usually become the focal point. This project came out great, and I am really pleased with the result. The new cabinets were in place and we fit the flooring tight, making perfect cuts without the need of any additional moldings. Baseboard was installed around the rest of the room after the flooring was in place.

We glued the 5" Birch with Bona R850T adhesive and stapled with Bostitch flooring staples. Important tip: Not all adhesives are created equal! Check out the benefits to using higher quality glue during installation (from the product website):

Bona R850T is a one-component, moisture curing, water and solvent free, silane-based adhesive for wood floors. Bona R850T provides outstanding adhesion to a variety of surfaces,and allows for the natural movement of wood flooring.
